About Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a comprehensive business communication platform developed by Microsoft. While frequently understood to be a leading collaboration tool for video conferencing and chat functionality, Microsoft Teams also offers a full cloud-based telephony solution for businesses of any size. Through the SIP Gateway, Algo IP Endpoints may natively register into Microsoft Teams.

Algo & Microsoft Teams Compatibility

Algo products have been certified for native interoperability with Microsoft Teams via the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway. Algo’s 3rd-party, SIP-compliant endpoints are able to register directly to Microsoft Teams through the SIP Gateway or by utilizing a compatible Session Border Controller (SBC).

Deploying Algo’s suite of Teams-certified IP Speakers, Paging Adapters, Visual Alerters, Intercoms, and Displays for your voice paging, alerting, and door entry requirements is simple. Algo compatibility is streamlined and effective with native interoperability via the Team’s SIP Gateway.

Algo IP Endpoints are certified for native compatibility with the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway, accommodating dozens of different applications, from IP paging to emergency alerting, and hands-free visitor communication – all natively compatible in Microsoft Teams.

Deploying Algo within Microsoft Teams Environment

Algo IP Endpoints have been tested and certified for native compatibility with the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway. In order to deploy an Algo device, the following requirements must be met:

  • Algo IP Endpoint must be running Algo FW v5.3.4 or higher
  • A Microsoft Teams license must be available in the Teams Admin Center. Typically this would be a Shared Device License, although it may instead be associated with a full user license. Direct Inward Dialing (DID) must be associated with the license.
  • The Microsoft Teams production environment must support Algo devices – public preview is available in mid-April 2023, making this feature available to all.

In most applications, only a small number of Algo IP Endpoints will require SIP registration to Microsoft Teams – sometimes as few as a single device. Leveraging multicast, Algo IP endpoints can scale the solution to any number and combination of endpoints, without requiring each endpoint to be registered to Microsoft Teams.

Common Applications within Microsoft Teams

Organizations select Algo IP Endpoints within their Microsoft Teams deployment for a variety of applications including voice paging, alerting, emergency notification, and loud ringing. The three most common challenges and needs that organizations face are:

ENABLING LEGACY VOICE PAGING SYSTEMS

Algo endpoints can easily integrate analogue paging amplifiers and speakers into a Microsoft Teams environment utilizing the 8301 IP Paging Adapter & Scheduler. The 8301 is natively compatible with Teams via the SIP Gateway and forms a seamless bridge between Microsoft Teams and analogue devices. Algo IP Paging Adapters are feature-rich devices, offering additional functionality such as advanced calendaring, wideband audio and internal memory.

DEPLOYING IP-BASED VOICE PAGING SYSTEMS

Algo IP Speakers for voice paging provide a full IP-based voice paging solution that can natively integrate into the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway. Algo’s IP Speakers can all register directly into Teams or may utilize the embedded multicast functionality to reduce license requirements. Deploying a full IP solution brings ultimate flexibility to organizational voice paging needs. Algo’s range of IP Speakers are feature-rich, offering wideband capability, two-way talk, and ambient noise detection.

EMERGENCY ALERTING AND TELEPHONE NOTIFICATION

Algo audible and visual alerting devices are ideal solutions for creating effective emergency alerting and telephone ring detection in Microsoft Teams environments. With direct connectivity into the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway, Algo endpoints can deliver notifications easily from a Teams client or IP Phone. Algo Visual and Audible alerters deliver highly attention-getting notifications with ultrabright multi-colour LED visual alerts and high-intensity audible notifications.

Multicasting in Microsoft Teams

Algo’s IP Endpoints support RTP multicast and can be deployed as either multicast send or receive devices. Utilizing multicast within a Teams environment allows organizations to easily scale across any building, campus, or enterprise environment while maintaining costs and complexity.

RTP Multicast allows data or information to be sent simultaneously to numerous IP endpoints through an IP multicast stream. Algo IP endpoints can be preprogramed to be either a multicast sender or receiver. Multicast senders can initiate a multicast message and broadcast it to the network. Multicast receivers are programmed to listen for multicast messages, and upon receiving a multicast message, the device is activated to play a tone, flash an alert, or initiate a pre-recorded audio file.

With multicast, organizations can deliver a message to many endpoints simultaneously, scaling communication simply and effectively across any environment. Multicast differs from unicast activities (such as a SIP call) in that unicast is a one-to-one messaging system where one message is sent to one device and multicast is one-to-many where one message is sent to many devices.

Ring Detection and Loud Ringing in Microsoft Teams

Typically, the built-in ringer in VoIP phones is sufficient for use in an office or retail setting. However, there are certain situations and environments where it may not provide enough volume to be heard by workers.

Loud ringing devices provide ample volume to ensure the ring of a telephone can be heard even when ambient noise levels are high.

Whether the situation is critical, or a worker needs to be alerted of a visitor, loud ringing devices can be installed to ensure such messaging is not missed. Loud ringers are particularly valuable in environments where there is too much background noise, such as in a manufacturing facility or a warehouse where heavy equipment may be in use.

Deploying IP speakers for loud ringing is an easy way to reduce frustration in the workplace and ensure all critical communication is received.

LOUD RINGING THROUGH MICROSOFT SIP GATEWAY

Algo IP Speakers and Visual Alerters may register directly into the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway and be associated with the user or phone which needs additional ring notification. In this deployment, when the Microsoft account in which the Algo IP endpoint is registered rings, the Algo Speaker or Visual Alerter will be activated simultaneously.

USING 2507 RING DETECTOR FOR LOUD RINGING

The 2507 Ring Detector is designed to enable loud ringing, notification, and visual alerting directly from a compatible SIP phone. This deployment allows for ring detection without the need of a device license or connectivity to the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway. The Ring Detector can detect when the phone is ringing and activate an Algo device with a smart relay input, such as an Algo 8180 IP Audio Alerter or an Algo 8138 IP Color Visual Alerter.

Simplified Loud Ringing in Teams Environment

A common challenge for Microsoft Teams customers is ensuring all telephone ring activities are heard. This is most commonly an issue in industrial applications with loud ambient noise or where hearing protection is worn. Algo’s IP Endpoints can address this challenge in a simple, cost-effective manner; fortunately, organizations deploying IP phones with suitable headset jacks may take advantage of the Algo 2507 Ring Detector in conjunction with an Algo speaker or strobe light to improve notification without needing a dedicated Teams license.
